Swiss rolling stock manufacturer Stadler has said it wants to supply trains and other solutions for the proposed revival of the Thap Cham-Da Lat rail route.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently sent a document to the Lam Dong Province People’s Committee, relaying a message from the Switzerland Embassy in Vietnam about the company’s interest in the project.
The People’s Committee has instructed the province Department of Transport to discuss possible cooperation with Stadler with the ministry.
Thap Cham-Da Lat was among the first funicular railway routes in the world when it was completed in 1932.
Due to the war its operation was suspended in 1968.
After 1975 almost all parts of the tracks have been removed, except for a 6.7-km section retained for tourism purposes.
In July last year the Ministry of Transport approved a proposal to revive the 84-km route at a cost of VND24.92 trillion (US$1 billion).
The Bach Dang Hotel Complex Trading-Service company, which is in charge of the renovation, is expected to build 16 stations. The work is expected to start in January 2025, and trains will begin running in 2029.
