Saudi Arabia defeat Uzbekistan to win U23 Asian Cup

Saudi Arabia became the champions of 2022 U23 Asian Cup after they beat hosts Uzbekistan 2-0 in the final on Sunday night.

In the early minutes, both teams stayed on guard and neither wanted to take risks or push forward. Although Uzbekistan had better possession in the first 15 minutes, Saudi Arabia’s defense was solid.

The guests gradually gained back control as chances started coming to them, while Uzbekistan also caused danger toward their opponent. They almost scored in the 33rd minute when Ulugbek Khoshimov made a lofted pass to Hojimat Erkinov to face the keeper, but he missed the target.

Saudi Arabia got a penalty in the 39th minute when Ahmed Alghamdi was fouled inside the box, but after reviewing the situation on VAR, the referee overturned the decision as another Saudi player was offside before that. The score remained 0-0 after the first half.

After the break, Saudi Arabia increased the pressure and four minutes into the second half, they opened the scoring as Hamad Al Yami passed the ball to an unmarked Alghamdi, who dribbled past a Uzbekistan defender before finishing cleanly to break the tie.

Uzbekistan immediately pushed forward to seek an equalizer and create multiple chances, but couldn’t convert any of them. In the 71st minute, Ruslanbek Jiyanov found the net after he received a through pass and slotted it past Saudi keeper Nawaf Alaqidi, but the referee called it offside.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia kept their composure under pressure and even scored another just three minutes later as Turki Alammar set up Firas Al-Buraikan in a great position to finish and his accurate shot sealed the 2-0 victory for the guests.

This is Saudi Arabia’s very first U23 Asian Cup title, and it’s more amazing that they won the tournament without conceding a goal after six matches.

They beat Vietnam 2-0 in the quarterfinals and went on to gain another 2-0 victory over Australia in the semifinals, where Uzbekistan defeated Japan. Japan won against Australia Saturday to claim the third position in the tournament.
