Coach Hwang Sun-hong admitted South Korea became uncertain after getting the red card and reconciled to drawing with Vietnam in the U23 Asian Cup on Sunday.
“South Korea scored first but could not control the game [after Lee Jin-yong got a red card],” he said after the game in Uzbekistan.
South Korea dominated with 74 percent possession and 11 shots, and found the net in the 63rd minute. But 15 minutes later they were down to 10 men men after Lee Jin-yog received a second yellow card.
Vietnam took advantage of this to score in the 83rd minute when Vu Tien Long equalized with a stunner.
Hwang was unequivocal: “I don’t think Vietnam were lucky to get a draw. We were the problem. South Korea should have had a better strategy after being down to 10 men. We were a bit confused after the red card.”
He was also impressed with Vietnam’s defense and how they can play pressing against South Korea.
“I think coach Gong Oh-kyun did a great job. He has created an amazing team.”
With four points from two games, South Korea are not in the safe zone yet as Thailand beat Malaysia 3-0 and also have four points.
Despite having only two points from two draws, Vietnam’s chances of advancing are good if they can beat Malaysia in the last match in group C, while South Korea and Thailand face off in a winner-take-all match.
Hwang said: “I don’t want the Thailand clash to be our last game of the tournament. We will make maximum effort to defeat Thailand and advance.”
The two games will be played Wednesday night.
