Northern Vietnam is expected to see a reduction in rainfall this week, while downpours are set to return to the southern regions due to the influence of monsoon winds.
Widespread rains drenched northern Vietnam over the past five days, driven by low-pressure systems. Rainfall from 7 p.m. on Aug. 21 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 24 ranged between 100-180 mm, with some areas recording up to 260 mm, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Starting Monday, the low-pressure area is forecasted to weaken, leading to a decrease in rainfall across the north. However, some regions in the northwest may continue to experience persistent showers.
U.S. weather service AccuWeather predicts that Hanoi’s temperatures will range from 26-34 degrees Celsius this week. In high-altitude areas like Sa Pa in Lao Cai Province, daytime temperatures are expected to be between 24-26 degrees, before dropping to 17-18 degrees at night.
In central Vietnam, regions from Ha Tinh to Ninh Thuan have endured scorching heat over the past 20 days. The hot conditions are expected to persist until Aug. 30, with daytime temperatures reaching 35-37 degrees Celsius. However, the formation of a low-pressure area early next month is expected to bring rain and break the heatwave.
In southern Vietnam and the Central Highlands, strengthening monsoon winds are forecasted to bring rain starting Monday. The Central Highlands will see temperatures between 28-32 degrees Celsius, while southern Vietnam will experience temperatures ranging from 32-34 degrees Celsius.
