Pattaya woman arrested for stealing $8,600 gold necklace from Chinese tourist

Thai police last week detained a Thai woman for stealing a 300,000-baht (US$8,600) gold necklace from a Chinese man as the Southeast Asian country is seeking to restore tourist confidence.

The 29-year-old woman admitted to the theft and agreed to pay the tourist back the value of the stolen necklace although it had been pawned and sold, Pattaya News reported.

The money was given to the Chinese tourist at the Pattaya City Police Station on Jan. 5.

The theft happened on Dec. 25 on South Pattaya Road as the 36-year-old tourist had been walking back to his hotel after a night out. He was approached by the woman offering to make friends with him, according to Khaosod English news site.

He declined the offer but stated the suspect continued to touch him before he walked away.

Shortly after, he found that his gold necklace that he claimed was worth 300,000 baht had been stolen.

He later filed a report to local police who took over a week to track down the suspect.

On Jan. 5, a court warrant was issued, and the thief was arrested.

In Thailand, thieves can be imprisoned for three years, alongside a 6,000 baht fine.

Thailand is targeting 8 million Chinese tourists in 2024, double last year’s figure.
