One week to overcome fire impacts: Nike supplier

It will take a week to overcome the impacts of a major fire on fulfillment of orders at South Korean-invested shoemaker and Nike supplier Changshin Vietnam, a labor leader says.

Dang Tuan Tu, union president of Changshin Vietnam, told VnExpress International that workers have been assigned to work in other production lines after the fire broke out Monday afternoon.

Fortunately, no lives were lost in the fire, Tu said. Around 120 people were working at the factory when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and the specific damage is yet to be assessed, he said.

While raw materials and some assets in the factory were destroyed, the company had bought fire insurance coverage from a Korean company, he added.

Tu said that when the fire spread, all the workers evacuated quickly and helped both in moving assets out and putting out the blaze.

Changshin Vietnam has operated the factory making leather goods and footwear since 1995. It employs nearly 40,000 people work there, making it the largest employer in the southern province of Dong Nai.

About four months ago, a fire broke out at the company’s 1,000 square meter workshop, causing extensive damage to several buildings.
