A cold spell that arrived over the weekend has caused temperatures across northern Vietnam to drop to one degree Celsius, with reports of snow in places.
On Monday, a cold front covers the entire northern region, with temperatures of one degree Celsius on the peak of Mau Son Mountain, which stands 1,500 meters high in Lang Son Province, five degrees in Trung Khanh District in Cao Bang, and 12 degrees in Hanoi, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).
The mercury was measured at six degrees in Dong Van District of Ha Giang Province and Tam Dao District of Vinh Phuc Province, and at seven degrees in Sa Pa Town of Lao Cai Province, which is three-four degrees lower than Sunday. Those localities are all in the northern mountainous area.
In the delta area, the average temperature remained at 11-13 degrees Celsius.
The first large-scale cold spell to hit the northern region for the winter of 2021-2022 brought frost and snow to Fansipan, Vietnam’s highest mountain in Sa Pa, on Sunday, with temperatures hovering around three degrees.
The strong spell has sent temperatures in the north-central region to 13-19 degrees. The rest of the central locality enjoyed cool weather of 17-24 degrees, the NCHMF stated.
The cold spell is expected to remain for several days, with temperatures expected to drop lower Tuesday to 4-7 degrees in the northern mountainous area, and 9-12 degrees in the northern delta.
