Nokia promotion brings 10 Gbps Internet to Vietnam

Some 10,000 families and businesses in Vietnam will soon enjoy an Internet connection speed of 10 Gbps this week thanks to a collaboration between Nokia and VNPT.

Finnish telecom firm Nokia announced on Wednesday that it would collaborate with state-run VNPT to launch a fiber broadband Internet network with a speed of 10 Gbps, the first of its kind in Vietnam.

Nokia would provide fiber access nodes for servers and modems to bring the Internet to end-users, the phone maker announced.

In the initial phase, 10,000 families and businesses in eight of Vietnam’s largest localities will enjoy the Internet connection, Nokia said, without specifying the exact localities or mentioning any other details about the planned project.

Dang Anh Son, general director of VNPT-Net, said the project would be VNPT’s first move towards providing high-quality Fiber to the FTTx service as demand for larger Internet bandwidths increase.

A representative from Nokia said the firm would provide 7360-FX Lightspan fiber access nodes, along with Quillion chipsets, as part of the project. The 7360-FX Lightspan fiber access is capable of connecting thousands of users over fiber, while the Quillion chipset can support multiple passive optical network (PON) technologies over the same fiber, using half the energy compared to older-generation chipsets.

The 10 Gbps Internet network will be the fastest Internet network available in Vietnam, surpassing the 1 Gbps broadband package launched by FPT earlier this year. The 1 Gbps package is currently the fastest internet available to consumers in Vietnam.

Despite the large bandwidths, service providers said actual Internet speed would depend on the limitations of end-users’ devices.

Vietnam aims for 84% of its families to be using fiber Internet access by the end of this year. Within the first quarter, the figure had reached 75.36%, a 6.46% increase from the same period last year.

Vietnam’s fixed broadband Internet speed reached 92.51 Mbps in April, ranking it 41st globally, according to Speedtest.
