The “no pants” trend, showcased by Lisa from the K-pop group Blackpink at the Le Gala des Pièces Jaunes concert in Paris, has reportedly sparked debate in South Korea.
The Korea Herald reports divided public opinion, with some applauding it as freedom of expression and others condemning it as provocative and inappropriate.
“We should obtain the freedom to express ourselves,” reads one comment on a related news article about the pantsless look sported by K-pop stars, as quoted by The Korea Herald.
“It reminds me of diapers,” said another.
The report stated that the fashion statement, defined as wearing underwear as outerwear, first caught attention in 2022 when Kendall Jenner showcased a Bottega Veneta ensemble from the spring 2023 collection, pairing black briefs with sheer tights.
The trend has since been embraced by other K-pop artists from girl groups LE SSERAFIM, SISTAR, and (G)I-DLE.
Nevertheless, Julia Hobbs, acting European fashion features director at British Vogue, predicts that the trend will become a significant phenomenon next year, regardless of gender, according to The Independent.
