Nine fatalities reported after heavy rain in the north

Nine fatalities were reported after prolonged heavy rain, floods and landslides in northern Việt Nam.

HÀ NỘI — Nine people have died following the prolonged rain and heavy floods in northern Việt Nam over the past week.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control reported that the floods have also led to the emergency relocation of 63 households, with nearly 600 homes submerged.

Nearly 2,500ha of rice and crops were flooded, while 33.2ha of aquaculture destroyed.

In terms of transport, over 297 sites have experienced landslides and blockages, with a total of more than 54,000 cu.m of soil and rocks washed down hill sides.

Immediately after the disaster occurred, local authorities visited and supported affected households and mobilised forces to assist in recovery efforts.

The Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control has advised cities and provinces to closely monitor weather forecasts and disaster warnings and proactively implement response plans.

Areas in the downstream regions of the Hồng (Red) River and Thái Bình River are urged to ensure safety during the operation of the Sơn La, Hòa Bình, Tuyên Quang hydropower dams.

Localities should take measures to ensure the safety of the dyke system and respond to the flooding situation. — VNS
