Media firm fined for illegal YouTube ad

A Ministry of Information and Communications unit issued a penalty against media firm WPP Media Limited (GroupM) on Wednesday for a third cross-border advertising violation this year.

GroupM received a VND35 million ($1,442) fine for posting YouTube ads that contained illegal content according to Vietnam’s cybersecurity law. The ad was made for Procter & Gamble Vietnam Ltd and Unilever International Vietnam Ltd.

This is the third penalty for the same violation of GroupM this year. The previous fines were for ads of Bayer Vietnam Ltd and FrieslandCampina Vietnam Ltd.

The Department of Broadcasting, Television and Electronic Information warned GroupM that more severe measures would be taken if the company continues to violate the law.

On its website the department said that it has recently found cross-border ads that contain “toxic” content designed to sabotage the Vietnam Communist Party and State.

To ensure safety for brands and to build a healthy, safe, and fair competitive advertising business environment for both domestic and international enterprises, the department has been coordinating with different government bodies to strengthen the oversight of online advertising violations.

The information ministry has published a “black list” of advertising agencies that companies should not partner with.
