A 31-year-old man in the central province of Quang Nam died on Sunday after suffering from multiple wasp stings.
Le Viet Phuc was attacked by the insects as he and a group of others were collecting wasp nests to sell the pupae, said Phan Dinh Dung, Tam My Tay Commune chairman in Nui Thanh District.
People rushed the man to a local medical center but he was unconscious on arrival. He fell into a deep coma, suffered brain injuries and was announced dead later that day.
Phuc and his wife have three children aged 4 to 6, and do not have stable jobs. According to local officials, they are among very poor families in the area.
In certain parts of Quang Nam, people collect wasp nests to sell pupae for a living. A kilo of pupae is sold for VND300,000-450,000 to be processed as food.
