Last trains arrive for first Saigon metro

Ho Chi Minh City’s metro line No. 1 has received all 17 trains, with the last two arriving Friday.

Six cars that make up the two trains reached HCMC’s Khanh Hoi Port in District 4 one week after leaving Japan.

Like the previous 15 trains, the newly-arrived ones will be transported to Long Binh Depot in Thu Duc City to be installed on the tracks.

With two more trains added, metro line No. 1, which runs 19.7 kilometers from Ben Thanh Station in District 1 to Long Binh Depot in Thu Duc City, has now received all 17 of its designated trains.

All of the trains are made in Japan. Each comprises three cars to carry 930 passengers at most, with each spreading 21 meters long, four meters high, and weighing 37 tons.

The trains are designed with a maximum speed of 110 kph on elevated sections and 80 kph underground.

Nguyen Quoc Hien, deputy head of the HCMC Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR), the project investor, said the arrival of the last two trains means the project has entered a new phase and is ready for testing.

Set to cost over VND43.7 trillion ($1.89 billion), HCMC’s first metro has three underground stations and 11 on the surface.

After several delays, the line is now more than 90 percent complete and set to be up and running at the end of 2023.
