Land management issues a roadblock for development: Party chief

Vietnam’s land management still has issues that prevent land from fully becoming a power source for socio-economic development, Party Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said Wednesday.

At the opening of the fifth plenum of the 13th Party Central Committee in Hanoi, Trong said land is a nation’s precious resource that belongs to all of the people. There are those who get rich thanks to the land, but there are also those who get poorer because of it, he added.

He asked that officials and authorities need to find out why land as a resource has not been fully utilized to become a power source for socio-economic development, why some lands are still being used wastefully, why corruptions regarding land still exist, and why the real estate market remains to be “unstable and risky.”

There needs to be discussions regarding land, such as policies and initiatives to plan and use land, to put land up for rent, to hand out land compensations and to develop the real estate market, among other topics.

The fifth plenum of the 13th Party Central Committee is expected to last seven days, where delegates would discuss on land policies and law, agriculture and rural development, the development of a collective economy, and anti-corruption work, among others.
