HCMC traffic police instruct restaurants to inform on drunk customers

The HCMC traffic police want restaurant owners to cooperate and inform them if customers drive drunk.

Police in Binh Thanh District said Wednesday they visited restaurants in several places like Pham Van Dong Street and instruct them to remind customers about the Law on Prevention and Control of Harmful Effects of Alcoholic Beverages.

They were also told to put up signs saying ‘No driving after drinking’ and inform the police if they see drunk customers driving vehicles.

Many restaurant owners said they were surprised to see the police coming around for this purpose.

One said their restaurant helps customers book taxis if they are too drunk and keeps their vehicles overnight for free.

Earlier a traffic police team in District 1 got bars and restaurants to sign agreements for the purpose.

Drunk driving is a punishable offence, with even those riding bicycles facing fines of up to VND600,000 ($25.67).

In the case of motorbikes and cars, the fines go up to VND8 million and VND40 million and licenses are revoked for up to 24 months.
