HCMC tops Singapore, Bangkok in walkable city stakes

Ho Chi Minh City ranked third and Hanoi ninth in the list of Asia’s best cities for tourists to explore on foot, according to online language platform Preply.

To compile the list, it analyzed the overall walking distance of an average one day-tourist itinerary in each city, from breakfast spots to tourist sites and meal locations. Then, it compiled the data to discover the time taken, the number of steps, and the calories burned.

The total route length in kilometers was then converted to walking time using Google Maps.

In HCMC, a tourist can spend 52 minutes walking 2.1 miles and this walk is equivalent to 4,200 steps and 210 calories burned.

“The city’s well-connected roads make it a pleasant destination if you want to use walking as your main mode of transport,” according to Preply.

Dubai was the best walkable city in Asia, followed by Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Singapore ranked fifth while Bangkok came in eighth.

According to the study, in Singapore, a tourist can spend a little over an hour walking 2.9 miles (4.7 km), equivalent to 5,800 steps.

“Known for its brilliant urban planning, Singapore offers an enjoyable walking experience with its network of covered walkways, pedestrian bridges, and lush green spaces,” the study added.

In Vietnam’s capital Hanoi, tourists can wander through popular attractions and try out some delicacies for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a total walking duration of just 77 minutes covering a distance of 3.5 miles.

This means visitors will take only 7,000 steps during an average day of exploring, burning around 350 calories overall.
