HCMC to put anti-graffiti coating on iconic new bridge

Ba Son Bridge over the Saigon River between District 1 and Thu Duc City will be covered with a special paint that will allow graffiti to be wiped off.

The new symbol of Ho Chi Minh City would be repainted by the second quarter of this year, Pham Minh Hai, deputy director of the Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center, said at a meeting Thursday.

Since its opening in April 2022 vandals have repeatedly defaced it with graffiti.

In January surveillance cameras will be installed at five places around the bridge.

This would help keep vandals out, Hai said.

His center has also recommended that local authorities should enhance patrolling to deal with people vandalizing traffic infrastructure in the city, including Ba Son Bridge, by imposing fines, requiring them to restore the vandalized areas to their original state and rewarding whistle-blowers.

Ba Son Bridge, called Thu Thiem 2 at the time of its opening, is a 1.5-km cable-stayed bridge with six lanes.

It was built at a cost of VND3.1 trillion, and has become a popular sight for locals and tourists.
