A storm drain in Ho Chi Minh City broke, resulting in a sinkhole on Go Vap District’s Nguyen Oanh Street Friday morning.
The sinkhole, which spans around 20 square meters and is around three meters deep, is near an intersection between Nguyen Oanh and Phan Van Tri streets, which has a sewage system down below.
Heavy rain just a few days prior made the hole wider than it used to be.
Locals have tried to cover it using steel plates and wood planks, preventing accidents from happening. On Friday morning, dozens of workers from HCMC Urban Drainage Company reinforced the road and resolved the issue.
Authorities said the storm drain, made of aluminum, was built over 40 years ago. Water leakage caused the surrounding earth and rocks to be eroded, creating the sinkhole.
In 2020, the same location saw two sinkholes appearing for similar reasons.
