HCMC bans container trucks to build new road near airport

According to a recent announcement by the municipal Department of Transport, the move is to ensure safety for the tunnel project, which will be built at the intersection of Phan Thuc Duyen and Tran Quoc Hoan streets in Tan Binh District.

The ban will be applied from June 18 this year to April 13 next year to prevent container trucks on eight routes in Districts 3, Tan Binh, and Binh Thanh.

Normally, container trucks are allowed on those routes from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day.

The department has presented a list of alternative routes for drivers.

The new road project with six lanes will stretch 4 km to link Tran Quoc Hoan and Cong Hoa streets, both of which lead to the airport.

Expected to ease long-lasting traffic congestion around the international airport, the road costing VND4.8 trillion (US$204 million) from the state budget will also connect to the airport’s T3 terminal, which is under construction.

The six-lane road, designed for motor vehicles to travel at a speed of 50 kmph, will be installed with a lighting system and lined with trees. It will have two tunnels.

With work starting late last year, the project is expected to get completed in August next year.

Tan Son Nhat is the country’s busiest airport with an average of 60,000-70,000 passengers per day.

Last year it served 34 million passengers, against a designed capacity of 28 million.
