Hanoi wants to increase 10th grade class size to accommodate growing numbers

Hanoi education authorities plan to increase the number of students in public schools to 50 per class in 10th grade.

In a report on enrollment in the 2023-2024 school year, the Department of Education and Training expected the number of students graduating middle school in the next three years to increase by around 29,000. Meanwhile, the city would only add six more public high schools in that period.

So, to accommodate the burgeoning numbers, it has sought permission from the Ministry of Education and Training to increase the number of classes in schools by 10% from 45 to 50, and the number of students in each by 10%, also to 50.

Other solutions it proposed include tracking the progress of delayed projects to secure land for new schools.

This follows concerns about a school and class shortage after the city’s education department said last week that only 78,620 out of 129,210 students in the capital managed to enter 10th grade in public schools this year.

The department has planned to renovate and repair 123 high schools under its management by 2025. The city is also seeking public opinions to build 16 more schools.
