Hanoi considers bicycle-exclusive lanes

Hanoi is looking into developing lanes exclusively for bicycles as a trial to maintain traffic safety and relieve congestion.

Besides the development of bicycle-exclusive lanes, other proposals include increased traffic network accessibility for disabled and elderly people, as well as infrastructure to assist vulnerable groups.

Over the past few years, Hanoi has trialed separating vehicles into different lanes, though there have been no exclusive lanes for bicycles. Plans to utilize rental bicycle services in certain districts remain to be deployed.

As of July, Hanoi had over 7.6 million vehicles, with over a million cars and 6.5 million motorbikes. There is no data regarding the number of bicycles in the city.

To fight congestion in the next three years, Hanoi plans to develop and synchronize its traffic infrastructure, focusing resources to complete ring roads 3, 4 and 5.

Main traffic routes, bridge systems and vital traffic intersections would also see investments to relieve congestion.

The capital is now planning to increase the percentage of land reserved for traffic, as well as constructing rest stops along national highways.

Hanoi aims to reduce the number of traffic accidents and their victims by 5-10% a year until 2025, and reduce the number of traffic accident victims by at least half by 2030, compared to numbers recorded in 2020.
