French auction house again delays auction of 11-kg imperial gold seal

French auction house Millon said it has rescheduled the auction of a 19th century Nguyen Dynasty imperial seal following the Vietnamese government’s interest in it.

This is the second time it is postponing the auction of the 11-kg gold seal. An announcement on its website said: “Due to the strong interest of the Vietnamese State for lot 101 gold seal of Emperor Minh Mang, we postpone the sale of this piece to Friday, November 18, 2022 at noon.”

The seal used by King Minh Mang (1791-1841) drew great attention when it was first put up for auction on October 31.

But then Millon put it off to November 10 before again rescheduling it.

According to the French auction house, the square seal is 10.4 centimeters high and its handle is in the form of a coiled dragon with a raised head.

It expects it to go for 2-3 million euros (US$1.98 – 2.97 million).

Vietnam’s Department of Cultural Heritage has confirmed the seal is authentic. It said Millon deferred the auction to give the Vietnamese government a chance to buy it directly if possible.

It also called on individuals and organizations to join the auction, buy the seal and bring it home.
