HCM CITY — An expressway system connecting the southeast region, including HCM City, and the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta, is expected to be completed by 2030.

It was laid out in the Politburo’s Resolution No 13 for socio-economic development and ensuring national defence and security in the delta region until 2030, with a vision towards 2045.

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has signed a Resolution issuing an action plan to implement Politburo Resolution No 13.

Under the resolution, eastern and western sections of the North-South Expressway, and the HCM City – Sóc Trăng, Châu Đốc – Cần Thơ – Sóc Trăng, Hà Tiên – Rạch Giá – Bạc Liêu, and Hồng Ngự – Trà Vinh expressways will be completed by 2030.

A system of seaports and international border gates will be also completed by 2030.

The Mekong Delta region is expected to achieve an annual average growth rate of 6.5 per cent to 7 per cent from 2021 to 2030, as the economy doubles in size during the period.

Developing a digital infrastructure to build e-government and a digital economy will also be a focus.

The resolution also sets goals for socio-cultural development and improves the living conditions of local people.

Cần Thơ City will be turned into the most developed centre of the Mekong Delta region, while Mỹ Tho, Tân An, Long Xuyên, Rạch Giá, Cà Mau and Sóc Trăng will become major secondary cities.

Phú Quốc island in Kiên Giang Province will be developed into a centre of high-quality ecological tourism and services for national and international tourists with linkages to major economic centres in the region and the world.

The plan will also focus investment on developing the An Giang and Đồng Tháp economic zones that border Cambodia into centres of industry, trade, services, tourism, urban areas, agro-forestry and fisheries.

The Mekong Delta region will also get priority to develop socio-economic infrastructure, including infrastructure to adapt to climate change and modern, smart and synchronous information technology infrastructure in association with the growth of economic corridors.

The region is one of the largest and most fertile deltas in Southeast Asia and the world.

The Mekong Delta, also known as the southwest region, is comprised of Cần Thơ City and the provinces of An Giang, Đồng Tháp, Long An, Tiền Giang, Vĩnh Long, Bến Tre, Trà Vinh, Sóc Trăng, Hậu Giang, Bạc Liêu, Cà Mau and Kiên Giang. The southeast region includes HCM City and the provinces of Bình Dương, Bình Phước, Đồng Nai, Tây Ninh and Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu. — VNS
