The average English score during the 2024 national high school graduation examination was the lowest among all the tested subjects, at 5.51 out of 10.
Among the 906,500 candidates participating in the English exam, 565 had a perfect score of 10. 145 of them, however, scored below 1.
Around 43% of candidates scored below 5, a drop of 2% from the examination last year. The average score of all participants was 5.51, a slight increase from last year’s 5.45.
The English exam contains 50 multiple-choice questions to be completed within 60 minutes. Teachers said students’ scores should be around 6.5-7.5 on average, and only the truly exceptional can score a 9-10.
Last year, among the 876,000 candidates of the English exam, around 500 of them had a perfect score. The average score was 5.45, with the mean score at 4.2. Around 45% of the participants scored below 5.
This year’s high school graduation examination lasted two days, from June 27 to June 28.
Over 1.07 million students participated in the exam, with the core subjects Literature, Math, Foreign Language, along with natural science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and social science subjects (History, Geography and Civil Education) being tested.
They scored an average of 6.45 in Math, 7.23 in Literature, 6.67 in Physics, 6.68 in Chemistry, 6.28 in Biology, 6.57 in History, 7.19 in Geography, and 8.16 in Civil Education.
