Restaurants and supermarkets in Singapore have been offering its first-ever durian buffets amid bountiful supply from Malaysian farms.
Supermarket chain Giant held its first durian buffet at the carpark of its Tampines outlet earlier in June, which attracted a large number of durian lovers, Strait Times reported.
A Giant spokesman said the chain plans to offer the one-hour buffet again.
Other durian stores such as Zeng Zu Fu and Lexus Durian King are also offering free-flow durian feasts.
The Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Fruit Farmers’ Association said that Malaysia now exports more than 100,000 kg of fresh durians to Singapore on a daily basis.
Thanks to abundant supply, the prices of durians have fallen by 20-30% compared to last year.
Primarily grown in tropical countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, the durian is distinctive for its large size, strong odor and thorn-covered rind.
Many countries across Asia have banned durian from public transport, hotels, and other enclosed spaces, which testifies to the fruit’s stench.
However, its aroma belies a rich, creamy flavor, and the fruit has become a popular staple used to prepare specialties such as cakes, ice cream, shaved ice, fritters, and sweet Thai-style soup.
