A Chinese engineer at the New Zealand water service provider Wellington Water is under official probe after boasting on social media about avoiding work during office hours.
In the video posted on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu on Jan. 5, the unnamed employee claimed that she had just returned to office after the New Year holiday and had no intention of working for the entire day, according to the South China Morning Post.
She then showed her nearly vacant office, suggesting that her colleagues were also idle.
She proceeded to check some emails before leave work at noon for a movie and a gym session.
She also unapologetically admitted that she had been working at home for two prior days two without really doing any work.
This video, later shared on Vimeo, caused outrage in Wellington, New Zealand, especially as the firm had warned of a water shortage.
In response, Wellington Water defended its work culture and started an internal investigation into the employee’s conduct.
