Central Vietnam airport reopens after runway repair

Vinh International Airport in Nghe An Province reopened Tuesday morning after closing for almost a day to fix the runway.

Hoang Van Thu, its director, said repairs to cracks on the runway were completed by 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

At 8:20 a.m. a flight from Hanoi arrived.

“It was not a serious problem,” Thu said.

On Monday morning airport safety personnel discovered the cracks, and 20 flights had been delayed so that they could be repaired.

Thu said the cracks were spread over an area of eight meters by five meters.

The airport was closed at 10:50 a.m. on Monday, stranding hundreds of passengers.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, the cracks were possibly the result of high temperatures, which caused the asphalt to blister and peel off.

The runway has been in operation since 2003 and handles 21-26 flights a day.

Nghe An, like many other places in northern and central Vietnam, has been experiencing temperatures of more than 40 degrees Celsius.
