Brazilian police shoot player on pitch as brawl breaks out after match

Gremio Anapolis goalkeeper Ramon Souza was shot in the thigh after a 1-2 home loss to Centro Oestes in the Campeonato Goiano Segunda, the second division football league of the state of Golas, Brazil.

After the match on Wednesday, a group of Gremio players rushed to attack the referee and then had a brawl with Centro Oestes players. The police had to step in to control the situation, but one of the officers suddenly opened fire. The video of the incident at Jonas Duarte Stadium quickly went viral on social networks.

Souza had his thigh punctured by rubber bullets from police at close range, resulting in serious injuries. He was given first aid at the pitch and then transferred to the hospital by ambulance.

On Facebook, Gremio confirmed the incident and said they will take the necessary steps so that the person responsible is punished.

“A horrific, unbelievable and criminal act from someone who should have promoted the safety of people on the pitch. This violent and disgusting incident will never be forgotten,” Gremio wrote.

Gremio also said that goalkeeper Souza received first aid in time, so he didn’t get an infection. The wound is not life-threatening and he is recovering well.

Brazilian news agency Globo said Goias Police have immediately investigated the incident. Authorities are committed to complying with the law and will not tolerate any police misconduct.
