The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam wants two military airports in the central and southern regions used for civilian purposes.
Thanh Son airport in Ninh Thuan Province and Bien Hoa airport in Dong Nai Province “should be considered” for civilian use, the CAAV said in a report to the Ministry of Transport following a review of airport development plans for 2021-30.
In April the government had formed a team comprising officials from several ministries and local authorities and led by Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh to assess the possibility of using the two airports for both military and civilian purposes.
Both were built before 1975 and are used by the military.
Dong Nai Province in the south and Ninh Thuan do not have a civilian airport.
Long Thanh International Airport under construction in Dong Nai is set to be completed in 2025.
Vietnam has 22 civilian airports, and late last year the ministry had increased the number to 28 by 2030 and 31 by 2050, including 14 international airports.
