Austrian millionaire consults 50 strangers on how to spend $27 M inheritance

Marlene Engelhorn, heiress to the BASF pharmaceutical fortune, is asking 50 strangers to determine how she spends her US$27 million inheritance.

Engelhorn initiated a survey among 10,000 Austrian citizens then selected 50 that could represent the widest range of the country’s population to form the Guter Rat, or the good council in English

The group will meet in Salzburg over six weekends this year to discuss the best way to spend the money, the New York Times reported.

She inherited millions of dollars from her grandmother, Traudl Engelhorn, who passed away in 2022 with an estimated net worth of $4.2 billion, according to CBS News.

Her grandmother was a descendant of Friedrich Engelhorn, the founder of multinational pharmaceutical company BASF.

Engelhorn has previously pledged to give away 90% of her inheritance.
