Phu Dien Tower in Thua Thien-Hue Province was named “the world’s first excavated and preserved ancient brick Cham tower deep under coastal sand dunes” by World Records Union on Monday.
Built by the Cham people to worship Hindu gods, the ruined tower is one of the earliest remaining Cham brick structures in central Vietnam, dating back to around the 8th century.
In 2001, a group of diggers mining titanium ore in Phu Dien Commune suddenly discovered an ancient brick building with unique architecture deep within the coastal sand dunes.
Local authorities then ordered the excavation of the ancient tower.
At the time it was buried in five to seven meters of sand.
In 2001, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognized the tower as a national relic.
