Vietnamese women qualify for World Cup for first time

Vietnam will be playing the 2023 Women’s World Cup for the very first time after a 2-1 victory in the play-off against Chinese Taipei on Sunday.

Chuong Thi Kieu opened the score for Vietnam in the seventh minute by accurately heading the ball into the rival’s net after receiving the corner pass from Tuyet Dung.

An early goal helped boost the spirit of the team throughout the match.

Goalkeeper Kim Thanh’s net was shaken in 20th minute after Phuong Thao’s wrong pass.

Taiwan’s brightest star, Su Yu-Hsuan, made the pass in for Chen Yen-Ping to cushion the ball into the goal. But the referee disallowed it since the ball was out of the touchline.

In the second half, Vietnam focused on defensing, with Kieu successfully blocked many of attacks from the enemy team.

Taiwan managed to equalize in the 50th minute.

Only six minutes later, Vietnam regained the lead. Thanks to Thai Thi Thao’s precise pass, Bich Thuy caught the ball well and then kickded it straight into the opponent’s net.

In the following minutes, Taiwan tried to increase the pressure, but the Vietnamese players successfully neutralized it.

The final whistle of referee Yoshimi Yamashita created a historic moment for Vietnamese women’s football.

They will be heading for the 2023 Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand in July next year.
