A court in central Vietnam has sentenced a man to 8 years in prison for selling his teenage girlfriend and her friend abroad for VND180 million (US$7,200).
Cut Kham Huong, 29, of Ky Son District in Nghe An Province was found guilty of “human trafficking” by the Nghe An Provincial People’s Court on Monday.
He had been in a romantic relationship with a local girl, whose identity has not been disclosed.
In 2015 she had confided in him about her difficult family situation and asked for help to find a suitable job, and he took advantage of this to trick her and sell her for money. He promised her a job abroad.
The girl, who was then 16, asked a friend of the same age to join her, and Huong promised both that “they would be allowed to return home during the Lunar New Year.”
In July that year he arranged for the two girls to take a bus across the border and meet a woman identified only as Ly.
Ly then sold them as brides to bear children for men abroad. Huong received VND180 million from Ly.
In 2020 Huong’s girlfriend was granted permission by her husband to return to Vietnam to visit her family.
She decided not to return.
In February this year her friend also managed to return to Vietnam. The two then reported Huong’s depraved act to the police.
Besides imprisonment, the court also ordered Huong to pay both victims VND90 million as compensation.
