Singaporean influencer Xiaxue apologizes for controversial comments about Thai women

Singaporean influencer Xiaxue issued an apology and clarification after backlash over remarks about Thai women, claiming her comments were taken out of context.

On video posted on Instagram and TikTok on July 27, Xiaxue said: “If you’re Thai and you felt hurt or attacked, I’m sorry, and that’s not my intention.”

The controversy arose when Xiaxue responded to a viewer’s question on the YouTube show “Ladies First”, asking why Singaporean men are often attracted to women from Thailand, highlighting numerous friends whose exes cheated with these women.

In her response, Xiaxue explained that these women often come from a “less well-off country” and may work in jobs that are “generally frowned upon,” allowing men who support them to control “what to do, where to go, and what to wear,” according to The Straits Times.

Xiaxue clarified that she was specifically referring to Singaporean men who date foreign sex workers, not all Thai women. “I am specifically referring to girls who are working in the sex industry.”

She said: “The original long-form video, meaning the one where I explained a lot more, is a lot less offensive because in this particular clip… it was edited into a very short clip. So the meaning has completely changed.”

She further explained that many Singaporean men date women from Thailand because these women often come to Singapore to work in the sex industry, seeking to marry wealthy men. The men feel a sense of superiority from being providers.

Xiaxue emphasized that there are “plenty of decent Thai girls” and not all Thai women in such relationships are involved in the sex trade. While the clip has since been deleted, it was reposted online by others, as reported by the Independent Singapore.

Xiaxue, 40, born Wendy Cheng, is a Singaporean blogger and social media personality. She has an 11-year-old son with her American ex-husband Mike Sayre, whom she divorced in 2023. Known for her candid and often controversial views, she frequently discusses topics such as beauty, lifestyle, and current affairs.
