HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Phú Trọng, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam Central Committee, passed away on July 19, 2024. His life is a bright example of steadfast dedication and remarkable service to his nation.

Comrade Nguyễn Phú Trọng was born on 14 April 1944, Hometown: Đông Hội Commune, Đông Anh Ward, Hà Nội. Place of Residence: No.5 Thiền Quang St, Nguyễn Du Ward, Hai Bà Trưng District, Hà Nội. Joined the public service on 5 December 1967. Inducted into the Communist Party of Việt Nam on 19 December 1967.

SERVICE HISTORY

December 1967: Staff, Documentary Section, The Study Review (now the Communist Review). Inducted into the Communist Party of Việt Nam on 19 December 1967.

August 1968 – August 1973: Editorial Staff, The Communist Review. Field training in Thanh Oai Rural District, Hà Tây Province (now Hà Nội). Youth League Secretary, The Communist Review.

September 1973 – April 1976: Research Student, Political Economy Faculty, Nguyễn Ái Quốc High-level Party Academy (now the Hồ Chí Minh National Political Academy).

May 1976 – August 1980: Editorial Staff, Party-Building Committee, The Communist Review, Deputy Party Secretary at the aforementioned.

September 1980 – August 1981: Studied Russian Language, Nguyen Ai Quoc High-level Party Academy.

September 1981 – July 1983: Research Fellow, then presented his Candidate of Science (now Doctoral) thesis in Historical Science (Party-Building major) at the Soviet Academy of Sciences, under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union

August 1983 – August 1987: Deputy Chairman, Party-Building Committee, The Communist Review.

September 1987 – February 1989: Chairman, Party-Building Committee and Deputy Party Secretary (July 1985 – December 1988), then Party Secretary (December 1988 – December 1991), The Communist Review.

March 1989 – April 1990: Member, Editorial Board, The Communist Review.

May 1990 – July 1991: Deputy Editor-in-Chief, The Communist Review.

August 1991 – August 1996: Editor-in-Chief, The Communist Review.

At the Mid-Term 7th National Party Congress (January 1994), he was elected to the Party Central Committee. He was member of the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th Party Central Committee.

August 1996 – February 1998: Deputy Municipal Party Secretary, Hà Nội City, concurrently Chairman of the Party University Affairs Board, directly in charge of the Hà Nội Municipal Information and Education Board.

At the 4th Meeting of the 8th Party Central Committee (December 1997), he was elected to the Politburo. He was member of the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th Politburo.

February 1998 – January 2000: In charge of the Party’s ideological, cultural and educational works.

March 1998 – November 2006: Deputy Chairman, Central Ideological Committee, then President of the Central Ideological Committee, in charge of Party ideological works (November 2001 – August 2006).

August 1999 – April 2001: Member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Việt Nam.

January 2000 – June 2006: Municipal Party Secretary, Hà Nội City for the 13th, 14th and 15th Party Committees.

May 2002 – Present: Member of the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th Legislatures of the National Assembly.

June 2006 – July 2011: Chairman of the 11th and 12th Legislatures of the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Việt Nam, Secretary of the National Assembly Party Caucus, Member of the National Security and Defence Council.

January 2011 – Present: General Secretary of the 11th, 12th and 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Việt Nam, Secretary of the Central Military Commission.

February 2013 – Present: Chairman of the Central Steering Committee on preventing and combating corruption and wrongdoing.

August 2016 – Present: Member of the Central Public Security Standing Party Committee for the 2015-2020 and 2020-2025 terms.

October 2018 – April 2021: General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam, President of the Socialist Republic of Việt Nam for the 2016-2021 term, and Chairman of the National Security and Defence Council.

April 2021 – Present: General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Việt Nam, Secretary of the Central Military Commission, member of the Central Public Security Standing Party Committee, and Chairman of the Central Steering Committee on preventing and combating corruption and wrongdoing.

For his many extraordinary contributions and achievements in service of the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation, Comrade Nguyễn Phú Trọng was awarded the Gold Star Order, Medal of 55 years of Party Membership, and many other Vietnamese and international awards and orders. These include the “National Gold Medal” from the President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, the “Friendship Medal” from the Party and State of the People’s Republic of China, the “Lenin Prize,” the most prestigious award of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, and the “José Marti Order” of the Communist Party and the State of the Republic of Cuba. — VNS
