Hanoi police have identified three men as the main suspects who chased after a 22-year-old girl and fired pellets that killed her after a dispute at a birthday party.
Two of them are in police custody while another is still at large.
Investigation results announced by the police on Friday showed that at around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the woman and several female friends attended a birthday party at a venue in Tay Ho District.
At 1 a.m. the following morning, the group went to one of the friends’ house in Long Bien District and were joined by two men, Vu Thanh Quang, 30, and Dinh Xuan Sang, 40.
Quang and Sang are acquaintances of the hostess.
They continued to party until dawn.
Early on Wednesday, as the two men were about to leave, one of the women made a remark that apparently offended them.
The men then returned to their place and asked Nguyen Xuan Dat, 33, to join them for revenge, police said.
All three men got into a car with a pellet gun and came to the house in Long Bien District.
When they encountered the group of women in front of the house, Sang asked them to stop and talk, but they ran away in different directions.
One of the women was driven away on a motorbike by her boyfriend.
Sang drove the car and chased after them to an alley on Ngoc Thuy Street where he encountered a couple.
He opened fire with the pellet gun and hit the woman, sitting on the back of the motorbike.
The victim was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
As police were informed of the shooting, they arrested Quang on Wednesday evening in the northern Nam Dinh Province while he was attempting to flee to Ho Chi Minh City.
Dat turned himself in on Friday.
Police are now requesting Sang to surrender for leniency.
