The peak of Mau Son Mountain in Lang Son Province saw temperatures dropping to minus 2 degrees Celsius Friday morning as Hanoi recorded temperatures at 10 degrees.
During the sixth day of the latest cold wave in northern Vietnam regions, average daytime temperatures in the plains were below 15 degrees, while the midlands and the mountains saw temperatures below 13 degrees. Mau Son peak, situated over 1,000 m above sea level, saw its temperatures dropping to sub-zero.
The peak of La Pan Tan Mountain in nearby Yen Bai Province saw ice and frost covering its surroundings.
Hoang Xuan Thanh, a 30-year-old local man, said the ice began to form from Thursday night, and by 8 a.m. Friday has covered the ground, the grasses and tree branches.
“The most icy areas are located 1,700 m above sea level, spanning around a square kilometer. The ice has not dissipated by 11 a.m.,” he said.
23 out of 25 northern Vietnam localities on Friday saw temperatures below 10 degrees, with 10 localities seeing temperatures below 5 degrees, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. Certain mountainous areas saw temperatures hovering around 3 degrees, including Lao Cai’s Sa Pa, Dien Bien’s Pha Din and Ha Giang’s Dong Van.
In Hanoi, for the first time this winter, the Ba Vi weather station recorded temperatures at 10 degrees, while other stations in Lang, Ha Dong, Son Tay and Hoai Duc saw temperatures at 11 degrees. Actual temperatures outside the stations could be 2-3 degrees lower.
U.S. weather forecast service AccuWeather anticipated Hanoi’s temperatures to be at 9-18 degrees on Friday, before getting warmer by 1-2 degrees in the coming days, and be at around 14-26 degrees by Dec. 28. High-altitude locations like Sa Pa would see the lowest temperatures at 2-8 degrees on Friday, and temperatures would remain at 2-12 degrees in the next three days, before gradually rising to around 14 degrees.
Meteorological agencies said the cold wave would remain in northern Vietnam for at least the next three days. On Christmas’s Eve, temperatures across the north are expected to fall below 13 degrees.
Due to the impacts of cold air, north central Vietnam localities like Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh saw temperatures dropping to 10-12 degrees. Localities from Ha Tinh to Khanh Hoa would also see rain levels of up to 100 mm over 24 hours, according to the national weather center.
