Coach Park Hang-seo picked Kylian Mbappe as his first choice for FIFA’s The Best Award on Monday.
His second and third choices were Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah. However, Mbappe didn’t win and he was not even in the FIFA Best XI. Although often considered one of the best strikers in the world at present, Mbappe didn’t win any significant title with his club Paris Saint-Germain or the French national team.
Defender Que Ngoc Hai, who used to be Vietnam national team captain from 2018 to 2021, placed Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema first, followed by Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski and Messi.
Lewandowski is the winner of The Best this year. He broke the record of most goals scored in one Bundesliga season with 41 goals. After 27 games this season, the 33-year-old also netted 34 goals.
FIFA’s The Best Award is voted for by head coaches and captains of national teams, along with international sports journalists.
The selection criteria for (men’s and women’s) players of the year were: sporting performance, as well as general conduct on and off the pitch from Oct. 8, 2020 to Aug. 7, 2021.
