Does eating chocolate boost a woman’s sex drive?

Châu ÁDear Doctor, I have heard many say that eating sweet treats such as chocolate can boost a woman’s emotions and sexual desire. What do you think about this? (Mai, 25, Hanoi)

Answer:

Low sex drive in women could be caused by many reasons, including birth control, anti-depression medication, vagina dryness, or hormonal changes.

Chocolate is a great source of phenethylamine, which helps release endorphins – the hormone one’s body generates while having sex. Consuming chocolate could also boost one’s sensitivity and emotions. Therefore, women who frequently eat chocolate could actually experience a stronger sexual desire.

However, women should consume dark chocolate only, while consumption of other types like white or milk chocolate should be limited, as these contain a high level of sugar and excess sugar intake, in the long term, could lead to various diseases.

More specifically, high-sugar food, including bubble tea and bread dipped in condensed milk, could raise blood sugar levels, block the bloodstream, and affect one’s skin, liver, kidneys, and genitals. Not to mention that sugar enhances the aging process.

Women are recommended to develop healthy eating diets and maintain regular exercises if they want to boost their sex drive. To be specific, a diet that is high in fiber, whole grains, beans, fish, vegetables and fruits, and low in red meat, is effective.

Getting enough water and sleep everyday, consuming healthy fat in avocados, almonds, fat fish, peanuts, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, olive oil and coconut oil are also suggested.

Meditating or practicing yoga for at least 10 to 15 minutes a day, avoiding stress, and not taking non-prescribed anti-depression medication are other things that should be done.

Moreover, women should directly express their concerns with their partners. If you suspect that you have any unusual symptoms of physical or sexual illnesses, you should see your doctor.
