Star forward Huynh Nhu had her first appearance for Lank FC who defeated Valadares Gaia in the opening round of Portuguese league Campeonato Nacional Feminino (CNF) on Sunday.
With Lank leading 1-0 in the 88th minute, Nhu was subbed in for Malu Schmidt. This was her debut in CNF, Portugal’s top female football league. During the 10 remaining minutes of the game, Lank focused on defense, giving Nhu little room to reveal her offensive ability. Instead, she contributed to three ball-winning situations and a counter-attack.
Lank won 1-0 overall.
The club had announced Nhu as a new signing on Aug. 25 but had to wait 12 days to register her for the season due to work permit problems.
Coach Daniel Pacheco complimented Nhu for her ability to adapt quickly to the new environment.
The CNF features 12 teams. Lank are one of the five teams to claim victory in the opening round. The club will play the second round on Sept. 18 against Toreense.
Nhu, national team captain, is one of the most decorated female footballers in Vietnam. She has won seven national championships and three National Cup titles. She’s also the recipient of four Vietnam Golden Ball awards.
