Vietnam placed second in Davis Cup Cup Asia-Oceania Group III and advanced to the playoff of Group II.
In the final of Group III in southern Vietnam’s Tay Ninh Province on Saturday, Vietnam faced Pacific Oceania. In the first match, Trinh Linh Giang played Clement Mainguy. Although Giang took the lead twice, he still let Mainguy come back to win 7-4 and 6-3, claiming the overall 2-0 victory.
The second match saw Vietnam’s number one Ly Hoang Nam going up against Colin Sinclair. Last year, Sinclair also defeated Nam during their Group III clash. But things were different this time, as Nam quickly won 6-2 in the first set. Sinclair returned with power in the second set and won 6-3. In the third set, Nam showed great stamina and tenacity to win 6-3 and 2-1 overall.
After two matches, the score was 1-1 while the doubles match is make or break for both teams, as Hoang Nam and Le Quoc Khanh played Sinclair and Brett Baudinet. The first set was balanced and had to enter a tie break, with Vietnam winning 7-6.
However, Vietnam couldn’t continue its momentum and lost the next two sets with the same score of 3-6.
In the third place playoff, Jordan beat Saudi Arabia 2-0. Therefore, Vietnam, Pacific Oceania and Jordan advanced to the playoff of Davis Cup World Group II.
