Vietnamese-Australian debuts in new K-pop girl group NewJeans

Pham Ngoc Han, an 18-year-old Vietnamese-Australian, recently debuted in the new five-member K-pop girl group NewJeans with the stage name Hanni.

The group was launched in late July by All Doors One Room (Ador), a label under the HYBE group that represents K-pop titans BTS.

Hanni, Korean-Australian singer Danielle, and three remaining Korean members – Minji, Haerin and Hyein – make up the group of five. Their ages range from 14 to 18 years old.

Since their official debut on July 22, the group has dropped many MVs including “Hybe Boy,” “Hurt,” “Attention” and “Cookie.”

According to Allkpop, a website that covers news about K-pop, Hanni’s appearance has become a hot topic.

The site stated that many people complimented Hanni’s appearance in online community posts, saying things like “She’s so cute! I like her!” or “Wow, she’s so pretty.”

According to Koreaboo, another K-pop related news site, a person commented online: “With her round face and lovely smile, she is most likely the visual of the group. She is also of interest because of her unique background – Australian of Vietnamese descent.”

Born in 2004, Hanni’s real name is Pham Ngoc Han. Hanni used to be a member of Aemina Dance Crew in Melbourne – specializing in covering choreography of Kpop groups like Red Velvet, ITZY…

Her father is from Hanoi and mother from Ho Chi Minh City. Both live in Australia.

Hanni can speak Vietnamese, English and Korean. She is 1.59 meters tall – the shortest member of the group.

According to local media, she is the first Vietnamese female idol to sign a contract with HYBE.

She was selected to join the group after passing the global audition Plus Global Audition 2019. She spent two and a half years as a trainee before debuting.

In July 2021, Hanni appeared in BTS’s “Permission to Dance” MV. At the time, she was nicknamed Cherry by fans because of her sweet and bright beauty.

In the introduction video of NewJeans, Hanni claims to be a curious person who loves to seek and learn new things. She said her personality changes erratically, sometimes being extremely lively and silly and at times profound and serious.

Hanni is the sixth Vietnamese origin artist that has debuted as a K-pop idol so far, according to Koreaboo.
