Hanoi will build six new bridges over the Red River under a recently approved urban plan spanning 13 districts.
The plan for the Red River urban area, which spans 11,000 ha, was approved by the Hanoi People’s Committee. The Red River itself accounts for 3,600 ha, its floodplain accounts for 5,400 ha, and the rest belongs to areas with existing constructions, including villages, residential areas and other infrastructure.
The six new bridges to be built over the Red River are: Hong Ha and Me So bridges on Ring Road 4; Thuong Cat and Ngoc Hoi bridges on Ring Road 3 and 5; Tu Lien Bridge connecting main traffic routes running alongside the river; and Tran Hung Dao Bridge connecting Tran Hung Dao Street with the Long Bien District area.
The capital city also plans to build two new traffic routes running alongside the Red River. On one side, the route would run from Hong Ha Bridge to Thanh Tri Bridge; and on the other, from Thuong Cat Bridge to Thanh Tri Bridge.
The Yen Vien-Ngoc Hoi and the Ha Dong-Bac Hong national railway route would be replaced with urban railways No. 1 and 6 that will run alongside Ring Road 4 and go over the Red River through the Hong Ha and Me So bridges.
The Red River urban area is expected to be home to up to 300,000 people by 2030.
