Vietnam returns remains of two missing US soldiers

At a solemn handover ceremony held Tuesday, Vietnam handed over two sets of remains believed to belong to American soldiers who died in the Vietnam War.

The ceremony took place in the central city of Da Nang. The remains were retrieved as a result of the 144th and 145th joint search carried out from July to December this year, a foreign ministry press release said.

Vietnamese forensic experts who examined the remains concluded that it was possible they were of U.S. soldiers who died during the Vietnam War. The experts recommended that further analysis and verification be done at the U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency’s laboratory in Hawaii.

The search for missing U.S. soldiers’ remains from the Vietnam War, which ended in 1975, has been an ongoing humanitarian activity that Vietnam has engaged in since 1988.

Tuesday’s ceremony marked the 157th return of U.S. soldiers’ remains since 1973.
