Vietnamese queue up to buy Samsung’s new Galaxy phone

Stores like FPT Shop, MTSmart and Sam Center began selling at 8 p.m. Thursday but some authorized distributors like Mobile World and CellphoneS rolled out the new model only on Friday.

Some customers who had made pre-orders got theirs early. These numbers ranged from 1,500 to 6,500 at each store. Unlike in the case of previous models people did not have to wait until midnight to activate their new phone.

La Quoc Toan of District 7 was one of the first people to lay his hands on the Galaxy S22 in Vietnam. He said he has a Galaxy S10 and a Note 10, but wanted an S22 Ultra since he liked the new design.

Duy Duc of District 5 unboxes an S22 Ultra. He said he uses the S20 Ultra and decided to upgrade to the new version since it has the photography features of the S series and the S Pen of the Note series.

The Galaxy S22 series has more internal memory.
The S22 has a starting price of VND22 million (US$963). The S22+ and S22 Ultra cost VND26 million and VND31 million.
The Ultra accounts for more than 80 percent of orders, with the blue and red versions being the most popular. Many buyers will have to wait until mid-March for delivery of the device.

In addition to the authorized resellers this year there are also stores like MT Smart and Sam Center selling only Samsung products.
Samsung is the largest smartphone brand in Vietnam, leading the market share with 34 percent last year. With just 4 percent market share, Apple was behind OPPO (19 percent), Xiaomi (13 percent), and ViVo (11 percent).
