Young golfer first Vietnamese to win Faldo Series Asia

Sixteen-year-old golfer Nguyen Anh Minh has become the first Vietnamese to win the Faldo Series Asia.

Minh kept the top of the table through all three rounds of the prestigious youth golf tournament organized by the legendary golfer Nick Faldo at Laguna Lang Co course in Thua Thien-Hue Province. With seven birdies and three bogeys, Minh scored -4 in the third round on Friday and finished the tournament with an overall score of -9 and five strokes less than the runner-up Isaac Lam of Hong Kong.

In the first two rounds, it was Syed Yashal Shah who followed Minh closely on the table. However, the Pakistani player soon fell behind at the beginning of the third round when he scored consecutive bogeys. Lam took advantage of Shad’s mistake to take his second place and put pressure on Minh.

Minh had a good start but struggled in mid-round. He was partially distracted by the audience talking loudly on the phone, which led to a bogey on hole eight. After that, Minh hit the ball into the sand next to the fairway on hole 10 and got another bogey. However, two consecutive birdies helped Minh reach a score of -9, before playing consistently well for the rest of the round to keep the top of the table.

After 14 tournaments of Faldo Series Asia, there’s finally a Vietnamese winner. Minh will continue to compete in the world final of Faldo Series in November this year.

The teenager once again affirmed his position as the number one golfer in Vietnam. Last year, he became the first Vietnamese amateur golfer to win a professional tournament in the country with the Lexus Challenge title. It also made him the youngest golfer to win a professional tournament in Vietnam.

Minh will be Vietnam’s key golf player at SEA Games 32 in Cambodia next month.

“My goal is to win the first medal for Vietnamese golf at SEA Games,” he said.

Golf legend Nick Faldo also appreciated Minh’s talent and his consistency throughout three rounds of the Faldo Series Asia. He said Vietnamese golfers have improved a lot compared to previous tournaments. Besides Minh, other Vietnamese players Le Khanh Hung and Nguyen Dang Minh were also in the top 10 of the tournament, which was held from April 19-21.
