Yacht catches fire off Saigon coast

Three crew members of a yacht were saved in time after fire engulfed the double-decker on the Saigon River.

The ship with a capacity of 960 horsepower carried 10 passengers, the captain, and two crew members from Thu Duc City to Ben Suc Bridge, which links Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong Province, on Thursday evening.

After all of the passengers got off, captain Nguyen Van Nhat, 32, returned to Thu Duc with the two staff.

As they had just turned around, the engine of the yacht caught fire. The three men tried to put it out but they failed.

The flame quickly spread all over the yacht.

A boat nearby came to rescue the three men just before the fire completely destroyed the yacht and sank it.

The burned yacht was salvaged by HCMC’s waterway traffic police on Friday.

Police said the captain had a proper license and a problem with the engine had caused the fire.

A new version of the yacht would cost VND6 billion ($242,000).
