Woman fined for driving in wrong direction on expressway

A car driver was fined VND17 million ($693.74) and had her license revoked for six months after running in the opposite direction of a southern expressway Sunday.

The driver said that she was traveling to the Mekong Delta for work. As she was not familiar with the roads, combined with the fact that her tires were deflated, she drove her car on the opposite direction of the My Thuan-Can Tho Expressway for around 500 m, trying to find a way to get to the National Highway 1 to get her car fixed.

Camera footage from a different vehicle showed that the woman’s car ran on the opposite direction at high speed, with signal lights continually turned on to warn other vehicles. There were few vehicles on the expressway.

Dashcam footage from a car on the My Thuan-Can Tho Expressway shows another one driving in the wrong direction.

The My Thuan-Can Tho Expressway, spanning 23 km with four lanes, was opened late last year. This route, along with the My Thuan 2 bridge, helps cut down travel time from Mekong Delta’s Can Tho City to HCMC by around two hours. The ordinary route on National Highway 1 would take four hours.

Earlier this month, a 37-year-old driver was fined VND22 million for running his car at 210 kph on the expressway.
