Woman driven on car hood for 1 km after HCMC traffic dispute

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Dong Ho Street in Tan Binh District.

Pham Thi Thuy Van and a friend had parked their motorbike to buy bread when a car collided with their vehicle. After the collision, Van moved the motorbike to allow the car to pass. However, the situation escalated when the car’s driver exited the vehicle and began verbally assaulting her. Van, noting signs that the driver appeared intoxicated, decided to call the police.

As she began recording the encounter on her phone, the driver reportedly hit her with the car, causing her to fall onto the vehicle’s hood. Clinging to the windshield wiper, Van was driven for about a kilometer.

“I was holding onto the windshield wiper, fearing that if I fell off, I might be struck by another vehicle,” Van said.

In the video she recorded, she can be heard pleading with the driver to stop, but he continued driving.

Le Huynh Thanh, chairman of the Ward 8 People’s Committee, confirmed that the incident stemmed from a dispute following the traffic collision. According to Thanh, the car’s driver attempted to leave the scene, but Van objected. When the driver moved the car, Van “jumped on top of the vehicle.” After the car eventually stopped, Van dismounted, unharmed.

Authorities later visited the driver’s residence in Tan Phu District, but he said via phone that he was on a business trip.
