Winter monsoon to bring rain to northern, central Vietnam

Northern and central Vietnam regions would welcome the first winter monsoon winds of this year on Sunday, which will cause temperatures to drop by 3-5 degrees Celsius and trigger rains.

The winter monsoon winds would also facilitate strong winds and rough seas, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. From Sunday to Monday next week, northern Vietnam would see rain levels at 30-150 mm, the center added.

Hanoi’s temperatures on Sunday would hover around 19-26 degrees, before dropping to 19-24 degrees on Monday, according to U.S. weather forecast service AccuWeather. Temperatures would gradually rise towards the weekends to 24-33 degrees.

High-altitude locations like Lao Cai’s Sa Pa would see temperatures drop to 12-17 degrees on Monday.

The monsoon winds would impact central Vietnam regions starting Sunday night, causing temperatures in Thanh Hoa to drop to 19-23 degrees on Monday. From Sunday to Wednesday next week, localities from Thanh Hoa to Quang Ngai would see rainfall between 150-350 mm.

Meteorologists say winter may come early this year for Vietnam, with temperatures during the first few months of the season being lower than average compared to previous years. Northern and central Vietnam would see their average temperatures being 0.5-1 degree lower than usual in November and December, and average temperatures in January and February 2023 are expected to be lower than usual as well.
